Abyssinian Cat History:

Recent studies indicate the Abyssinian's origin to be the coast of the Indian Ocean and parts of Southeast Asia, although its name springs from the fact that the Abyssinians were introduced into England around the same time British soldiers were returning from the war in Abyssinia (now known as Ethiopia).

Abyssinian Cat Character:

Aside from its ancient history, the Abyssinian is very much a cat of today, and its affinity for people make it a popular pet. The Aby is intensely interested in what goes on around him, and you may very well find your Aby involved in many of your daily activities. The Abyssinian is equally at home in the show ring as well as a loyal family member.

Abyssinian Cat Appearance:

Your first impression is that you are looking at an Egyptian cat. The Aby's body is medium long, fine boned, but with well developed muscular strength. This cat gives an instant impression of lithe and grace, with long, slim legs, giving the illusion of standing on tiptoe. The head is a modified, slightly rounded wedge, with gentle contours. Its soft, sleek, glossy ticked coat comes in a variety of shades of red, ruddy, blue and fawn and has incredible lined, almond-shaped eyes which range in color from amber to green. The Abyssinian cat is a friendly, outgoing cat capable of learning a large number of tricks. They have a distinctive bell-like voice. If you are looking for an excellent family pet, the Abyssinian kitten is a great choice.
